The Essence of America in One Sentence


If I had to express the Essence of America in one sentence, it would be that sentence from the Declaration of Independence that stands out among the rest and glows multi-dimensionally with Truth…

“We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all [Beings] are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.” 

The Essence of America goes beyond race, color, creed, sexual orientation, gender, culture and any other distinguishing characteristic of the One in the Many.  It vibrates beyond wounds and differences.  It’s something inherent within each of us – no matter our background or experiences – and something we must aspire to remember, clearing all that which blocks its purity.

The Essence of America is not equivalent to “Americans”.  Those known around the world as “Americans” are those who live as citizens in the United States of America.  The Essence of America is not just about “Americans”… We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all [Beings] are created equal and endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights…. The Essence of America is universal and springs from the highest of spiritual attributes.  It speaks to Humanity.  The Essence of America is of the One and celebrates diversity as the vehicle for an infinity of unique experiences.

In many ways, the Essence of America is like the etheric soup which everything exists within.  All is included….nothing is excluded…each is sovereign to itself….yet connected to all others…by the One….and as the One.

As we converse around this Essence….connecting evermore fully with it….all that which blocks us from unification arises.  Beliefs, wounds, experiences, etc., all come to the surface for release.  I believe this is an important part of the transformational process as we aspire to unity as this essence.

As I consciously choose to see myself and those I come into contact with as whole and complete, my world changes.  As I begin to experience a world not built on need, I have the opportunity to witness Consciousness having its experience – through a myriad of forms.  Judgment ceases as I realize to critique God seems incredibly ridiculous…silly…arrogant.  It’s like someone coming up to Van Gogh, looking at one of his paintings and saying, “Don’t you think that blue should really be brown?”  (LOL!)  I’m beginning to respect each individual artist as they create their own reality which in turn allows me the same respect with myself.  Coming from a place of whole and complete, allows me to share from within….to express that which desires to be shared…without need or to be needed.  We are all artists not only creating our world with our thoughts, “rules” and beliefs but sharing the song of our very essence.  Beautiful…

If I allow it to be true.....there is a place where I begin to create my own reality independent of the “rules” of this world.  No longer governed by time, expectations, should’s and should not’s, I see the world through the eyes of a Master Creator.  It is complete surrender to my own Higher Guidance – my tie to the true Creator – that connects me to freedom and my song. 

As I ready myself to jump with both feet, my survival archetypes which have been my earthly bodyguards, making sure of my “earthly survival”, raise some last concerns…. “Does this Higher Guidance know how to operate in this world?  Does it know the pitfalls?  Does it know how to avoid disaster, pain and suffering?  Does it know enough to keep “us” alive?”  My sense is that this Higher Guidance – my own personal guru – knows that I am eternal and isn’t attached to “survival”.  It comes from a place of “whole and complete”.  It brings the wisdom, assurance and insights of the true sovereign…the sight of that which is free from the dictates of the illusion (illusory because it’s composed of rules and structures we have made, maintained and supported – not Universal Law)…allowing me to be in this world….and not of it. 

It’s strange to feel detached from the rules which have dictated my life to this point….how I should look, feel, work, play, act, etc.  To this point, I recognize that surrender to this divine part of my existence – allowing myself to be whole and complete – has been a process of reconnection….just one more step along the path home….

If I allow it to be true that I am whole and complete then the world around me falls away.  A world based in need, imbalance and deficit can no longer be my reflection.  If I allow it to be true that I am whole and complete and I see all others as whole and complete, I create and interact from a place without need.  Since the world, its systems, businesses and focus have been based in need, it now disappears and I find myself in in the wholeness of Nature….pared to my own nature…cleansed of all that which is not mine.  I am whole and complete within my own nature.  I am organic….all actions and interactions become organic as well…no plans…no worries…no doubt….no need.

If I allow it to be true that I am whole and complete, I create from my wholeness… I reflect my song…I paint from and as my song…that which I have been protecting for as long as I have been in human form….the most beautiful, delicate – yet eternal – hush inspiring, tear and smile invoking melody…it’s the song of my soul…and if I allow it to be true that I am whole and complete then I release all protections knowing my song is eternal…and I create from this song…from wholeness I create as this unique melody which has been buried and hidden for lifetimes…the Holy Grail has been found…. and freed.

What if I saw myself and all others as musical instruments…..each uniquely designed and enlivened by the breath of God…the life force of being?  What if I could sense the richness and depth of the music created through the interaction of God-Source-Consciousness and the unique characteristics of my divinely constructed instrument?  What if I took the time to relish the music played by Consciousness through the one-of-a-kind design of others?  Wow…..
When I take the time to consciously s-l-o-w-d-o-w-n, I sense the One in the many…the breath…the life force…God…I see the amazing array of instruments….I feel the joy of Consciousness as it revels in the uniqueness of each one….and I begin to experience myself as a part of the One….seeing the opportunity of Life through the eyes of Consciousness that inhabits my instrument as well as the instrument of others.  My interactions become duets, trios and orchestras…sacred  “jam sessions” of sorts…and my need to dominate, convince or override transforms into a natural harmonizing where the discordant chords are every bit as inspiring and beautiful as the non-discordant….
In these moments of clarity, time ceases to exist and I allow the awesome nature of that of which I am a part to have its way with me….the truth overrides the illusion….and I hear and feel the divine melody performed through the instruments of the many…and I am reminded that no matter the moment…regardless of earthly circumstances…beneath the false façade….the One plays its music….always…

The Power of Equality

Last week, I was fortunate to share in an experience with a group of educators at an elementary school.  I was asked to facilitate a series of workshops and this was #2 in the sequence.  The first get-together was entitled “Because I am important…” and was focused on a more conscious understanding of Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.  This included recognition of the power we brought with us into this realm in the form of an opportunity (Life), the freedom to choose (Liberty) and an innate urge to follow that which calls us to happiness (pursuit of Happiness).  The question then being, “Am I taking advantage of the power I’ve been given?”  The second gathering bore the title, “Now that I understand you…” and the focus was equality. 

Some of you may remember that in my previous blog I shared “The Hug”.  It was about my experience with a homeless man that brought me to an incredible realization regarding the meaning of equality.  For me, equality is experienced in the acknowledgment of the existence of another face of God.  It is respect for a fellow expression of the One and Only. 

During the workshop, the power of equality became very apparent.  The impact of taking a moment to recognize and acknowledge the existence of another Being prior to any interaction is incredible.  The influence of feeling the respect from another for just being is transformative.  All of this became clear to me in this gathering of fellow faces of the One.  In this communal-like realization of equality…the room began to glow. 

After experiencing equality, the question naturally arose about disagreement and differences.  How can one maintain a sense of equality AND have interactions with others whom are very different from us.  For me, it became clear that we can do both.  We can hold the consciousness of equality AND not feel threatened by diversity.  When we hold equality, the playing field – within and without – becomes level.  We are ok being who we are…and others feel this same safety.  Conversation becomes a vehicle to understand – not to convince or dominate – and what is created in the conversation is definitely greater than anything any one of us could create by ourselves.

This was an amazing experience for me, to sense and feel the power of equality as a foundation for interaction, co-creation and union was unbelievable.  I realize from this experience that it is the conscious recognition of equality that is a unifying and healing force for humanity.  It is in equality that we find a solution for the troublesome challenges of unhappiness, shadow behavior, violence and tragedy.

The Hug

A couple of weeks ago, I had an encounter with a homeless person which has dropped into my consciousness on several occasions as of late.  My experience was one of those which “sticks out” in my mind and continues to draw my attention…it “glows” in some way with a message of sorts.  Yesterday, it dropped in again as I was chatting with my parents. This morning, I feel the need to write about it…to share it…perhaps because I’m finally conscious of the message.

So…a couple of weeks ago as I was walking into one of my favorite fast food restaurants, my attention was called by the “hello” of a homeless man in a wheelchair near the entrance.  I walked over to the railing – of which he was on the other side – and responded with my own “hello” as well as “how are you today?”  He then shared his story and though he didn’t ask for money…I offered it anyway.  He said a prayer for both of us and we said “good-bye”.  As I started to walk away, I felt an urge to hug him.  For the next 3-5 seconds, I questioned this nudge but then gave into it and headed toward him.  I asked him if I could hug him to which he responded affirmatively and with, “we shouldn’t be afraid to hug other people”.  When we hugged, I really felt his response.  And as I walked away, I felt my tears.  How many people go without the hug – the acknowledgement of their existence – by another human being?  How many children, brothers, sisters, moms, dads, grandparents, colleagues, friends, homeless persons….and other expressions of the One and Only go without acknowledgement of their existence? 

When we wonder why there is such an increase in human-initiated tragedy, we have no further to look than the frustration, anger and despair of those souls screaming for acknowledgement and love.  We have been trained not to “see” those who don’t fit into the human-created, exclusionary, narrow band of “norms” and “acceptability”.  We value some, celebrate others, put those we deem as “special” on pedestals and ignore the “others”.  Each and every face of the One and Only has gifts, talents and genius.  Each and every expression is deserving of acknowledgement and respect.  We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all [beings] are created equal… with this encounter, I sense I have a deeper understanding of equality.  It’s acknowledgement and respect for a fellow face of God.
